YUKSOM, West Sikkim

Yuksom is a small town in West Sikkim known for its gorgeous landscape and snow-capped mountains. Also popularly known as the Gateway to Kangchendzongha, the town blessed with jaw-dropping gorgeousness, is a must see. A virgin and extremely charming historical town Yuksom is known for its monasteries and Buddhist heritage as well. Located at an altitude of 1780 m, Yuksom was the first capital of Sikkim and therefore, has a religious connotation attached to the place.

The meaning of the term Yuksom is meeting place of the three lamas. It has been said that at the famous Norbugan Coronation Throne located in the town, the three lamas who originally came from Tibet met here to strengthen their own hold in the state of Sikkim. Apart from having religious importance, the town also has numerous ancient monasteries, historical monuments, tranquil waterfalls and lakes that will leave you spell-bound.

The inhabitants of Yuksom have promoted eco-tourism in this village, in fact it is also considered as the model village for eco-tourism. This small, but beautiful village doesn’t look like a growing centre of urbanisation, yet it has some decent facilities like hotels, restaurants, tour agencies etc.


If you wish to explore this scenic town, you don’t need to look for the best time to visit this place. The climate of this town which is located at a moderate altitude remains pleasant throughout the year. However, March to June and September to October is considered as an ideal time for sightseeing and several outdoor activities.


Airways: The nearest airport is in Bagdogra, West Bengal about 5 hrs drive from Gangtok, 12 km west of Siliguri and about 170 km from Yuksom. Sikkim also has got its first commercial airport at Pakyong, East Sikkim but weather hampers the operation of this airport most of the time. If you are lucky enough you can get a flight directly to Pakyong.

Railways: The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP) in West Bengal which is about 150 km from Yuksom. You can take a taxi to reach Yuksom via Jorethang, which takes about 6-7 hours.

Roadways: Yuksom is about 45 km from Gyalshing, the West District Headquarter and about 120 km from Gangtok, the capital city. We suggest you not to travel during the night as the road to Yuksom is poorly lit, try to leave as early as 11 am.
