SORENG, West Sikkim
Locked far away from the hustle bustle of city life, lies a picturesque town called Soreng. Surrounded by lush green hills amidst scenic splendor, it is a small town located in the West Sikkim. There are multiple places of interest in and around Soreng which are surprisingly less explored. Hidden and largely unexplored in the past, this town has slowly started gaining popularity among tourists who are willing to spend time with the nature and birdwatching.
There are multiple points of interests in and around Soreng like Chuli Dara (a.k.a. Heaven's Door), Mahabhir Dara, Durpiney, etc gives you a view hardly seen from any other places.
Sunrise as seen from Chuli Dara, is compared by many with that from Tiger Hill in Darjeeling. It is said thta in the early days, there were large number of mountain bees residing in this cliff and honey used to flow from the mountain, thus the name Mahabhir (मह - Honey; भीर - Cliff). Mahabhir Dara gives you a magnificent view of the scenic landscapes around. A panorama begins right from Don Bosco School in Malbasey, passing through Darjeeling, parts of West Bengal, and ends with Daramdin & Sombaria. All the while, beautiful villages down below called Tharpu & Budang rests silently with Rambhang River gushing by.
From here, you need to trek for few Kilometres to reach the top of the cliff, the Heaven's Door or Chuli Dara. A better view awaits there and it will give a feeling opf being on the top of every hill around.
Soreng can also be a place where you can stay and cover many other places like Daramdin, Kaluk, Rinchenpong, Varsey, Ribdi, etc.
BEST TIME TO VISIT
Anytime of the year except the rainy season would be best time to visit this place. Soreng can get chilly and cold during winter, so get some warm clothes if visiting in winter.
HOW TO GET THERE
Airways: The nearest airport is in Bagdogra, West Bengal about 5 hrs drive from Gangtok, 12 km west of Siliguri and about 110 km from Soreng. Sikkim also has got its first commercial airport at Pakyong, East Sikkim but weather hampers the operation of this airport most of the time. If you are lucky enough you can get a flight directly to Pakyong.
Railways: The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP) in West Bengal which is about 106 km from Soreng. You can take a taxi to reach Soreng via Jorethang, which takes about 5 hours.
Roadways: Soreng is about 45 km from Gyalshing, the West District Headquarter and about 105 km from Gangtok, the capital city.
