SINGSHORE BRIDGE, West Sikkim

Singshore Bridge, with an height of over 100 m and 240 m in length, is the highest bridge in Sikkim and the second highest bridge in Asia. It is located between Dentam and Uttarey in West Sikkim. It is truly a man made marvel that offers the spectacular baseview of immense greenery that makes it difficult to distinguish between the lowlands and the mountains. You can feel the thrill when you are standing in the middle of the bridge and the strong wind blows. The river flowing through the uneven rocks seems breathtaking along with the effusive sound of the waterfalls. It is one among the oldest bridge that connects two hills and shortens the travel time as well as the distance for the trekkers. This engineers triumph is certainly one of the most popular tourist destination in Sikkim.

Around 10 km away there is Uttarey Village, which is the last motorable road towards this end of West Sikkim, Indo-Nepal Border is closeby. Singshore Bridge is situated at a distance of about 30 Km from Pelling, which opens up the popular tourist destinations of Pelling for visit along with the Singshore Bridge, such as the Pemayangtse Monastery, Khangchendzonga Waterfalls, Rabdentse Ruins; a treat for the history buffs. Another very famous monastery; Sangachoeling Monastery is also situated at Pelling. Few other places in Pelling, like the Khecheopalri Lake, Sewaro Rock Garden and Darap Subba Village, can also be included within the trip to the Singshore Bridge.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

If you wish to explore this scenic place, you don’t need to look for the best time. However, September to May is considered as an ideal time as this part of Sikkim receives heavy rainfall during monsoon.

HOW TO GET THERE

Airways: The nearest airport is in Bagdogra, West Bengal about 5 hrs drive from Gangtok, 12 km west of Siliguri and about 152 km from Singshore Bridge. Sikkim also has got its first commercial airport at Pakyong, East Sikkim but weather hampers the operation of this airport most of the time. If you are lucky enough you can get a flight directly to Pakyong.

Railways: The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP) in West Bengal which is about 148 km from Singshore Bridge. You can take a taxi to reach Singshore Bridge via Jorethang and Dentam which takes about 5-6 hours.

Roadways: Singshore Bridge is about 30 km from Gyalshing, the West District Headquarter and about 137 km from Gangtok, the capital city.
