KALUK, West Sikkim
Kaluk is a village 2 kms from Rinchenpong located at an altitude of 5300 feet (1620 meter). It is part of the slightly offbeat trail of Rinchenpong, Kaluk, Hee Bermiok sector in West Sikkim. The destinations are quite close to one another and can be covered from any one place out of the above. The principal attraction of the place is the great views of the Kanchenjunga offered from here. Together Rinchenpong and Kaluk can be considered as almost the same destination one can literally walk from one destination to the other. Whereas most budget tourist accommodations are available at Rinchenpong, Kaluk is home for some of the better accommodations in the area.
Tourists visit Kaluk to luxuriate in the peaceful and pollution free surrounding and the see the great view of the mountains including Kanchenjunga range. There are also few monasteries and destinations that you may explore while being here, such as:
Gurung Monastery - The monastery is located at a vantage point on top of the hill not far from the main road. From here you can have grand views of the southern hills although the snow capped mountains of the North are not visible from here.
Rinchenpong Monastery – Further south on the same ridge and at a slightly lower altitude the Rinchepong Monastery is located. From here you can have great views of Kanchenjunga range on a clear day.
Heritage House – The Lepcha heritage house was built in 1860. It contains rich paintings and will take you back in history.

BEST TIME TO VISIT
Anytime of the year except the rainy season would be best time to visit this place. However if you would wish to see the Kanchenjunga Range, the ideal time would be March-April. The western part of Sikkim gets chilly and cold during winter, so get some warm clothes if visiting in winter.
HOW TO GET THERE
Airways: The nearest airport is in Bagdogra, West Bengal about 5 hrs drive from Gangtok, 12 km west of Siliguri and about 124 km from Kaluk. Sikkim also has got its first commercial airport at Pakyong, East Sikkim but weather hampers the operation of this airport most of the time. If you are lucky enough you can get a flight directly to Pakyong.
Railways: The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP) in West Bengal which is about 120 km from Kaluk. You can take a taxi to reach Kaluk via Jorethang, which takes about 4-5 hours.
Roadways: Kaluk is about 36 km from Pelling, about 27 km from Gyalshing, the West District Headquarter and about 119 km from Gangtok, the capital city.
