GANESH TOK, East Sikkim
Located at a distance of 6 km from Gangtok, near to the Tashi Viewpoint, Ganesh Tok View Point is one of the most popular attractions of Gangtok. The view point is set at a height of 6500 m and offers spectacular sights of the snow capped peaks. There is a small temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha at the view point. However, the temple is so small that it can accommodate just one person at a time. Even then the temple remains a major crowd puller for all tourists visiting Gangtok.
Located near Tashi View point at a hill adjacent to the television tower of Sikkim, it offers spectacular views of the city and on a cloudless day even of the magnificent Khanchendzonga, the third highest mountain in the world. The view point is the perfect getaway, which leaves you mesmerized by its scenic beauty. It is the perfect place if you wish to refresh and rejuvenate yourself. The place takes you closer to nature with its beautiful surroundings and pleasant ambience.
Adorned with colorful prayer patakas(flags) hoisted and tied across the roads, the path to Ganesh tok almost resembles a rainbow. Ganesh Tok View Point offers a bird-eye’s view of the entire Gangtok from the top. The best time to visit the attraction is early in the morning when it is enveloped with clouds.
There is a circular balcony around the temple and a viewing lounge to soak in the panoramic view of vast green expanses, the Raj Bhavan complex, and the entire town of Gangtok in all its grandeur. Often visited by tourists while visiting Hanuman Tok about 4 kilometers from the temple, Ganesh tok is a must visit for anyone planning a visit to Gangtok.
BEST TIME TO VISIT
This place is very close to the capital city Gangtok, so if you wish to explore this place, you don’t need to look for the best time to visit. However, September to May is considered as an ideal time since Sikkim receives continuos rainfall during monsoons.
HOW TO GET THERE
Airways: The nearest airport is in Bagdogra, West Bengal about 5 hrs drive from Gangtok. Sikkim also has got its first commercial airport at Pakyong, East Sikkim but weather hampers the operation of this airport most of the time. If you are lucky enough you can get a flight directly to Pakyong.
Railways: The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP) in West Bengal which is about 118 km from Gangtok. You can hire a taxi to reach Gangtok which takes about 3-4 hours.
Roadways: Gangtok is connected to the rest of India via NH10, which links Gangtok to Siliguri. Local taxis are available for local commute.
